Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Helene attended a small community college near Ithaca in upstate NY where her passion for clay began. Her exposure to the feminist movement, art, and women’s issues there changed her life and became her major influence.
To pursue her clay education, she moved to the southwest and attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. There, she studied and earned her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts and M.A. in Ceramics. Being something of an overachiever, Helene earned her license as a Massage Therapist at the same time!
The twin disciplines of being a sculptor and a massage therapist complemented each other.
“I realized that I referenced the female form by closing my eyes and asking my hands to tell me what I was seeing; and that the coupling of these two careers led to a deep-rooted wisdom of the female form beyond what my eyes could provide. When I listened to a body through my hands and when I listened to the clay and expressed what I heard though my sense of touch, a deeper understanding of form and content emerged.”–Helene Stolzenberg
For over 20 years, Helene has taught her innovative ceramic techniques in Arizona and New York at the college level as well as offering theme-related ceramic workshops for professionals and artists.
“As a Mid-life Woman, I am now experiencing the evolution of my own body with all of its changing textures and shapes as a reflection of my life. I am now creating to a new edge for myself and seek to express those changes in honor of not just my own female form, but those with which I stand hand and hand.”– Helene Stolzenberg
Helene has won numerous awards for her work and is in many private collections across the country.
